What to do as a couple in La Palma
The island has a density of experiences per square kilometre that few Atlantic islands can match. For a week together:
Stargazing from your terrace: On a new-moon evening, simply turn off the garden lights. In La Palma — and particularly in Puntagorda — the sky is unlike anything else in Europe. No equipment needed. Just sun loungers and time.
Ruta de los Volcanes: The trail that runs the length of the southern ridge between lava fields, fire-scorched pines and the sea on both sides. About six hours on foot, or walkable in sections. One of the finest treks in the Canary Islands.
Fuencaliente bodegas: Bodegas Teneguía, Bodegas Carballo. Volcanic wines, malvasía on black lava. A tasting session with ocean views at some bodegas is one of the best food-and-drink experiences in the Canaries.
Caldera de Taburiente: The National Park. An eight-kilometre-wide crater filled with waterfalls, Canarian pines and silence. The walk into the interior from the visitor centre is accessible without specialist equipment.
Santa Cruz de La Palma: The most beautiful small capital in the Canary Islands — and, many would say, the most authentic in the entire archipelago. Sixteenth-century timber balconies, a covered market, and the Calle Real for an unhurried afternoon stroll.
Almond blossom (February): If you visit in February, the almond-blossom route through Puntagorda and Garafía is one of the most eagerly anticipated spectacles in the Canarian calendar. The trees are in full bloom for a few weeks and the hillsides turn white against the volcanic rock.
When to go: the best time for a romantic break
Autumn (September–November): The favourite season for many couples. The sea is at its warmest, the days are long and the summer visitors have gone. The island is at its most verdant without the winter humidity.
Spring (March–May): Landscapes at their greenest, the Caldera has water in the barrancos and temperatures are ideal (18–22°C). Pool water is comfortable from April onwards.
Winter (December–February): Best for the south and the west coast (Fuencaliente, Tazacorte). Rain arrives in the north but the southern part of La Palma has bright days well into January. February is special: the almond blossom in Puntagorda is a sight worth building a trip around.
Summer (June–August): Peak season. Perfect temperatures in the interior (22–26°C) but the best trails are busier. Book further ahead.

Frequently asked questions
How many nights do you recommend for La Palma?
A week is the minimum to do the island justice. With 5–6 days you can cover the Caldera, the volcanic south, Santa Cruz and still have a couple of quiet afternoons at the cottage. Less than five nights is too short.
Is low season better for couples?
For most couples, yes. La Palma in September or October is almost entirely yours. Prices are lower and availability is better. The experience improves noticeably outside July and August.
Do we need a hire car?
Without exception, yes. La Palma’s rural properties are in areas with no useful public transport. The good news: the island’s roads are genuinely rewarding to drive and there is almost no traffic outside Los Llanos.
Is La Palma suitable for walking holidays as a couple?
Very much so. The island has routes for all fitness levels, from gentle forest walks in the Bosque de los Tilos to the full Ruta de los Volcanes. For couples who do not hike regularly, the shorter circular routes in the Caldera de Taburiente are accessible and spectacular.
How much does a week in La Palma cost for two?
