A resort pool has nothing in common with the pool of a rural cottage in the Gran Canarian interior. It is not a question of size.<\/p>\n

In a rural cottage, the pool sits within the same landscape that surrounds the house. In Mog\u00e1n, that means ravines of palm trees and volcanic rock, with the silence of the upper reaches of the municipality. In San Mateo, it means pine trees and a quality of light that shifts with the trade-wind clouds. In Agaete, it means the green of the Valle with the Atlantic in the background when the house is well positioned.<\/p>\n

The weather is almost always on your side.<\/strong> Gran Canaria has more than 300 days of sunshine per year, but the water temperature of an inland pool depends on altitude. Houses above 800 metres \u2014 around Tejeda and Fontanales \u2014 have cooler pools in winter. Houses in Mog\u00e1n and the south-west, at lower elevation, run warmer. Mog\u00e1n and the south-west: pools in subtropical gardens<\/h3>\n

The municipality of Mog\u00e1n has one of the island’s best-known clusters of rural cottages with pools. The areas of El Cercado and El Sao, in the upper reaches of the municipality, have fincas with mature subtropical gardens \u2014 avocado, papaya and banana \u2014 with pools set into the garden and views across the barrancos. This is the landscape that visitors from northern Europe picture when they think of the Canaries.<\/p>\n

Altitude here runs between roughly 70 and 250 metres, giving a warm climate without the extremes of the coastal south. Summer days are noticeably cooler than in Maspalomas. Winters are mild and the pool is perfectly usable from November through to March.<\/p>\n
